Day 6 Trip Report.
Days 4-5 were fiarly uneventful besides me pwning my friend at tennis so we can skip right ahead to the most intersting day of our trip.
We booked our Jungle Jeep Safari for the Wednesday. We were asked to be ready by 9:30am to leave. The Jeep Safari basically consists of being driven around to several different locations out in the countryside as well as a few more remote cool spots with lunch included as well as all you can drink on the Jeep/Bus.
We arrived close to 9:15 and sat around waiting for awhile until all the Bus showed up. The "Jeeps" hold about 18 people on them. They are basically open bed medium side buses with a roll cage in the back with semi comfy bench seats. Ours finally arrived and we were off closer to 10am which was a bit meh, but still no biggie.
There was one very cool thing about our specific tour and a few really annoying things about our tour. Our guide spoke perfect english with minimal accent. He was pretty awesome to have. Very clever, witty and charming individual. We was an excellent story teller. He had done a Foreign Exchange at University of Wisconsin(or Missouri) for a year.
He made the trip very entertaining for everyone. I wish I could say the same about the rest of folks on our trip. We basically got stuck in the "old timers" bus. So its 5 mid to late twenties people and about 10 people 50 and over (a few in their 70s) and 2 people in their later 30s. I have always found something odd when observing "old people" drinking. They become so useless and fucking annoying that I can barely stand to be in the same room as them. Or in this case bus.
Our friend Krys is fairly well know through out the world for getting pretty bombed and being by far the most annoying person around when intoxicated. The scary part about this trip is he was the 6th most annoying person on the bus. (Yes we counted). At one point one of the old men decided it would be a good idea to stick his finger in some kids face and push his forehead while we were stopped somewhere. There were about Ten 12 year old kids, and maybe 6 or 7 Dominican adults. I thought for sure this was going to provoke someone and it did a few of the kids but I think the rest of the kids kept them from retaliating and taking this situation even further. Having the kid not react to this old fucker only encouraged him to keep doing it to the kid. All in all he acted like a fucking 6 year old and I really wanted to smack him in the fucking face.
Anyways, If i keep going on about this i'll be typing all day. Lets just say that the 5 really annoying people on our bus were beyond annoying and always had "hilarious" comments that made no sense and were fairly degrading to dominican people in general and we had to listen to this for almsot 8 hours. BOooo..
Luckily for them we still had a great time otherwise I would have been flipping out on them.
So back to the trip.
We started off going through the city of San Juan pretty breifly. it was neat to see it in the day light because on our way to the resort we went through it at night. After that we went up into the country side and made our first stop at the top of a big hill with a really nice view of the country side and the ocean. Here we were met by a group of children that knew the bus stopped here and there would be candy given out for them. We walked from there up to their little run down village where there was an obviously out of place table setup that had tons of school supplies and candy on it. Seeing something new(Table and supplies) in the midst of such deploring living conditions just seemed strange. Also the woman selling them had a fat stack of American 20s in her hand. haha. And these people were just sitting around in their door ways with garbage everywhere and pretty much living in squallor.
We moved on from here to a Local school house where we were given 5 minutes to go in and visit with the kids and give them some school supplies and candy. Some of the kinds were pretty cute. A few that wern't in school were rather greedy/grabby and I didn't really enjoying giving them anymore stuff so we saved it for the kids that were pleasant and appreciative.
So after a few pics in the one room school house we were off again and walked down the street to a local residents house where we were given a tour and then got some fresh fruit snacks. Apparently nobody heeds the warnings about eating pre cut fruits and raw veggies in because pretty much everyone (except me) mowed down the foods. oh well. I guess they don't mind a little Hepatitis in their diet :P.
The house had a few very cute little puppies running around that we got to play with a bit as well. It was here that we got some more info about the farmers and their employees way of life and how things work out in the country. (very different from the city)
Finished later. I need to work right now...
Heres the rest:
After this we treked down to a building that was built by what appears to be the tour company as a lunch spot. It's a pretty nice thatch roofed building where they were selling all the uselss crap you see everywhere all over the caribean including the 2 million paintings that are always for sale.
lunch was very good, consisting of some rice veggie mix, carrots, delicious chicken, probably the best pasta i had all trip and a few other things. It was really quite excellent.
From lunch we went to a nice beach (unsure of the name). We stayed for about an hour and swam in the really nice warm ocean. The wind was pretty crazy bowling sand against your legs as you walked on the beach. It actually felt like someone was pricking you with really fine pins the whole time. The pic of this spot was of me with krys over my shoulder about to body slam him into the ocean.
This TR gets less and less detailed the longer i wait to finish it. haha. Soon it will consist of. Day 1 thru 8, went to Dominican. END.
Anways, after the ocean we went to the fresh water lagoo. 90% fresh, 10% salt water. It was really awesome. Thats the pic of me jumping off the cliff. You can see sooo far down into the water. It was really cool. Except when I got stabbed by a rusty metal wire while climbing out. I hope I don't get Tetnis. :) haha. that would suck. I don't enjoy dying a slow and painful death.
Their was also a rope for swining off of and dropping into the water. It was semi dangerous to even grab onto the rope as you had to climb up some stairs and then climb up onto the railing just to grab it. I obv did so and did a crappy drop into the water.
This was our 2nd last stop on the tour. Our last stop was the Waterfall where local kids jump into 10ft of water from about 50 feet. They only jumped for about 5 minutes while we all took pics and stuff and then they come around after asking for tips. This was a cool way to end the trip cause it was pretty crazy, some of the kinds were doing cool maneuvers in the air.
From here we had a very long annoying ride home having to listen to all of the previously mentioned "drunk old people". At this point almost all of them are belligerent and just completely sauced. They won't shut up, they complain about everything, and they all think they are hilarious. Maybe infact they were funny and just us 5 "young folk" were the ones that had it all backwards.....then again, maybe not. :D
We all went for dinner that night then went out to party it up, we ended up having a great night (best of the trip) and really just got bombed and had fun at the bar.
Last day: We got up did the breakfast thing, then went horse back riding on the beach. it turns out dominicans don't take care of their animals very well and we had too all ride undersized, under nourished donkey looking animals. They were infact horses but really not quite the sizes we are used to in North America. The first half of the ride was horrible. 5 horses on a 6ft wide trail with barbed wire on one side and a cliff on the other adn they are all jockying for position. A few times the horses would bite another horses neck. Once we made our turn to come back we moved onto the beach and all the horses split up and went at their own pace which made the ride back considerably more enjoyable and relaxing. (especially with a minor hang over).
After this we showered and checked out of our rooms by 12pm, then went and chilled by the pool all day. Well thats what everyone else did. I went and played beach volleyball for probably 4 hours. It was really fun, met some cool people. We did that for most of the rest of the day. About 5:00 we all got showered at the comminity showers and get preped for our bus ride to the air port.
i won't go into too much detail about our trip home because it will just be me complaining for a few paragraphs :)
We ended up getting back to London about 5am, Unfortunately for me I woke up at 8am and was bored out of my mind for pretty much the next 3 days.
Today (Monday Feb 26th) is the first day i've really felt good coming back to work and actually getting something accomplished.
Thats good for now.
Poker will be starting back up in 3-4 days I believe. I'm goign to start back at the 25NL and 50NL levels and try to grind for a month and see where i'm at after that.
Peace
